IMPERIAL — The Central Union High softball team narrowly defeated Imperial High 1-0 here Friday with the deciding run scoring on a Marissa Guzman double in the sixth inning.

The game was a well-fought defensive battle and the Tigers held on until the end but couldn't overcome the lone Spartan run.

Despite the loss, Imperial coach Kim Witte was proud of the way her team handled the Spartans.

"I couldn't be happier with my girls and the way they played," Witte said.

"We played one of the best teams in the Valley to 1-0, so it was a real confidence booster," she added.

The Tigers did manage to play good defense and Imperial pitcher Andrea Thompson held the Spartans to five hits.

"(Thompson) did a good job," said Central coach Sandy Montalvo.

Montalvo said the win was nice, but she would like the team to step up for future games.

"It was a nice win because it was a league win," Montalvo said.

She said poor pitch selection on the part of the Spartans aided Imperial's cause.

She then gave credit to Witte and the Imperial team.

"Imperial is a good team," she said. "Kim has been doing a really good job with them."

Witte said that she was impressed by her team's poise and noted that Imperial started four freshmen.

"I want to see that intensity and that confidence all the time," Witte said.

The intensity Witte spoke about was evident throughout the match up.

The Tigers faced Maria Perez, a strong Spartan pitcher, for much of the game after she replaced Nicky Carrion to start the bottom of the fourth inning.

Perez did not give up any hits and struck out two batters in the four innings that she pitched.

"They showed a lot of courage against her (Perez)," Witte said.

"They came out there swinging the bats," she added.

Imperial will next host Brawley on Tuesday at 4:15 p.m. and Central will next travel to Holtville on Tuesday for a 3:15 p.m. match up.
