HOLTVILLE — Nine suspected undocumented immigrants were injured this morning when the truck in which they were traveling rolled on Interstate 8 south of here.

U.S. Border Patrol agents observed the vehicle heading west on I-8 near Van Der Linden Road around 1:50 a.m. Monday, Border Patrol spokesman Manny Figueroa said.

The vehicle was moving erratically and agents suspected the driver may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol, Figueroa said.

When agents attempted to stop the truck, it took off at high rates of speed, Figueroa said.

Agents backed off and did not pursue the vehicle.

As agents approached the stretch of I-8 near Bonds Corner Road, they spotted the truck in the median, Figueroa said.

Though Figueroa did not know what caused the accident, he did say the truck was driving in a cloud of dust.

Nine people were injured in the apparent vehicle rollover, although Figueroa did not have information regarding the extent of the injuries or the names of those injured.

The injured were transported to El Centro Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Further information was unavailable.
