CALEXICO — U.S. Border Patrol agents seized more than 1,000 pounds of marijuana found hidden in portable toilets near the border west of here this morning.
Border Patrol agents working near the Westside Main Canal around 4 a.m. observed several individuals crossing the international border carrying large bundles, a Border Patrol press release states.
The individuals placed the bundles inside portable toilets about 75 yards from the border and then returned to Mexico.
Agents responded to the area and found the bundles, which contained 359 individually wrapped packages of marijuana, the press release states.
The marijuana was turned over to the Imperial County Sheriff's Office.
Monday's seizure was the second-largest drug seizure for fiscal 2001 in the El Centro Border Patrol sector.
