Bulldogs down Southwest

CALEXICO — While the set score was tied 9-9, the Calexico High School boys tennis team upped its Imperial Valley League record to 4-1 by edging Southwest High 84-71 in total team points here Monday.

Leading Calexico were its singles players, who accounted for 56 of the points.

Heading the charge for the Bulldogs was No. 1 singles player Chris Cota, who won 6-1, 6-1, 6-0. Miguel Cota, No. 2 for Calexico, accounted for three set points winning 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, 6-1. The No. 3 singles player for the Bulldogs, Samuel Garcia, had two wins at 6-2, 6-1.

Things were tougher for Calexico's doubles teams as they only picked up one set.

The No. 1 duo of Anthony Castallanos and Juan Gallardo lost 5-7, 3-6 and 3-6 while the No. 2 squad of Joseph Alvarez and Jair Hernandez fell 0-6, 4-6, 6-7 (3-7).

Calexico No. 3 squad Steve Rivera/Andre Barros picked up a 6-1 win but lost 3-6, 2-6.


Both teams play at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, with Southwest hosting Brawley Union and Calexico hosting Central Union.

Brawley 10, Indio 8

BRAWLEY — The Brawley Union High School boys tennis team defeated Indio High 10-8 here Monday in a non-league match, improving its season record to 6-1.
