Voice: Valley residents are good people, but need to clean up litter

April 03, 2001

I moved into the Imperial Valley a month ago, arriving with the rain and wind. I would like to say everyone I have met has been friendly and helpful. I have enjoyed reading your paper and have found the Opinion page and PROBE most interesting.

My question is in regard to the litter that is present everywhere. Anywhere I have gone in this Valley litter is present. It is on roadways, in fields, stuck on fences of businesses, in yards, etc. When not picked up litter blows on.

Out of curiosity, my friend asked an Imperial Irrigation District employee cleaning a canal why he did not haul off the garbage he pulled from the canal. The reply was he/they did not want to deal with the extra garbage it would create. So it blows on.

I was going home last evening and stopped to pick up boxes in the middle of the road. I have no idea how many cars drove into oncoming traffic to go around the discarded boxes. Had I not stopped, I am sure they would have ended up blowing east to who knows where to accumulate with other discarded litter.

I realize there are problems associated with incoming peoples who have no pride in the Imperial Valley, but what about its citizens?
