WINTERHAVEN — A woman allegedly stabbed her ex-husband here Sunday after the two reportedly had an argument over a dog.

The Imperial County Sheriff's Office received a phone call around 7 p.m. Sunday reporting that someone had been stabbed at 400 Picacho Road, sheriff's Sgt. Sharon Stogner said.

Valerie Jose, 37, of Winterhaven was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, brandishing a weapon and spousal abuse after allegedly stabbing her ex-husband, Broderick Kelly of Winterhaven, in the abdomen.

During the fight, reportedly over a dog, Kelly allegedly pushed Jose before Jose hit Kelly with a stick, Stogner said.

Kelly left the scene but returned a short time later and the fight resumed, Stogner said.

Kelly reportedly threw a brick at Jose before she allegedly stabbed Kelly once to the abdomen with a kitchen knife, Stogner said.

Kelly was transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center, where he was treated and released.

Jose was booked into county jail, where she remained this morning on $25,000 bail.

Though Kelly was not arrested by deputies, it's up to the District Attorney's Office to decide if charges should be filed against Kelly, Stogner said.
