50 years ago — There will be a farm implement auction April 6 at the Old Cook Ranch a half mile north of Seeley on Sunset Avenue. Items such as tractors, scrapers, subsoilers and disc plows will be offered for bid.

40 years ago — "Ben Hur," winner of 11 Academy Awards, will be shown at Palms Theatre in El Centro. Admission is $1.50 for adults and 75 cents for children.

30 years ago — Lawmen in California and Arizona are questioning two men about being involved in a shootout on Main Street in Winterhaven that resulted in the death of one motorcyclist and wounding of three more. Sgt. James Moore of the Sheriff's Office said in the past the "outlaw" motorcyclists have caused no trouble in the area.

20 years ago — A murder complaint carrying a maximum penalty of death has been filed in Calexico Municipal Court against an Oakland man accused of stabbing a 52-year-old hobo to death last year in Winterhaven. Under California law, Robert Courtney Stephen, 27, could be executed if convicted of one or both special allegations contained in the criminal complaints.
