Voice: Media should not accept spoon-fed Border Patrol misinformation

April 06, 2001

I have to express my disappointment with the local media. The Border Patrol has been telling us there is a 30 percent decrease in the apprehension of undocumented aliens.

What they fail to mention is that due to the philosophy of the administration of the Border Patrol, the local border has become a danger to all Valley residents. The Border Patrol has closed its checkpoints and placed its agents on the line. This is no secret to the alien smugglers. The philosophy is this will stem the crossing of undocumented aliens. What has actually occurred is the smugglers now know that all they have to do is get across and they are home free.

The Border Patrol administration has adopted a no-pursuit policy. This policy has tied the hands of the hard-working agents. What has occurred is the smugglers have found if they drive in an unsafe manner they will not be pursued. Some of the more dangerous tactics include driving the wrong way on the freeway, driving without lights and driving at high rates of speed.

The Border Patrol administration has said there is a decrease in illegal crossings. This is not true. The Imperial Valley has become the center of major alien smuggling operations. The Border Patrol administration has decided the citizens of the Imperial Valley do not deserve the protection that is given to San Diego citizens. I realize there are more votes and money in San Diego, but I still feel we count.

The local media has picked up the party line of the Border Patrol administration without verifying facts. I have the greatest respect for the agents who protect our border but feel that their administration has decided the safety of Imperial Valley residents is of no importance. This is not an immigration issue. If you believe people are staying in Mexico because of Vicente Fox, you are sadly mistaken.

Take the time to research the facts before exposing the spoon-fed propaganda of the Border Patrol administration.
