Track: Spartans, Vikings split tri-meet

The Central Union High School boys track team dominated Holtville and Imperial while the Holtville girls team won the tri-meet at Cal Jones Field in El Centro on Thursday.

The final points for the boys were Central 92.50, Holtville 35.50, and Imperial 28. For the girls it was Holtville 65, Imperial 51 and Central 42.

Central's Robert Guieb won the 800 meters in 2 minutes 8 seconds and the 1600 in 4:48. Anthony Hellum won the 100 in 11.11 seconds while Pedro Caro took the 3,200 in 10:41. Anthony Sabal won the long jump at 20 feet 3 inches while Jarell Henderson won the high jump at 5-10.

The Central boys took the 4x100 (44.94) with the team of Dante Bell, Sabal, Henderson and Hellum. Andrew Valdez, Felix Guieb, Robert Guieb and Henderson took the 4x400 in 3:43.31.


"I did pretty good. I just did the same thing I always do," said Guieb.

Hellum said, "I was pumped before the meet ‘cause I knew it was going to be a blowout."

Holtville's Santos Guzman took the 300 hurdles in 43.84 while Holtville's Eric Cueto won the discus throw with 115-1.

Imperial's Gabriel Ibarra led the Tigers, taking the triple jump (40-1), the 110 high hurdles (16.16) and the 200 (23.68). Teammate Mike Rodriguez took the 400 in 54.29.

On the girls side, Liz Robinson and Courtney Watson led Holtville. Robinson won the 800 (2:45) and the 1,600 (6:17). Watson won the 100 in 13.71 and the 200 in 29.20. Robinson and Watson, along with teammates Lindsey Cato and Rachel Hernandez, won the 4x400 in 4:34.

Hernandez won the 3,200 in 15:39 and Cato took the high jump (4-8). Hillary Singh won the discus with a throw of 95 feet.

"We were confident because all the girls were healthy and because we've been practicing all week," said Cato.

Imperial's Melissa Gaston took the 100 hurdles (19.24), the 400 (1:05) and the 300 hurdles (54.39). Jacqueline Stallings took the long jump (13-4) and the triple jump (29-9).

Imperial's Gaston, Sarah Henderson, Naomi Cowne and Brittany Hicks took the 4x100 in 56.18.

Central's Soñia Ramos was the only Spartan to win an event, taking the shot put at 29-1.

Central's boys are now 7-0 while the girls are 0-7. Central's next meet will be at Brawley at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Holtville's boys and girls, both 2-4 on the year, will host Mountain Empire, Julian and Antelope high schools at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Imperial (3-8 boys, 5-5 girls) will visit Bishop's High School in La Jolla at 3:15 p.m. April 18.

Southwest sweeps Palo Verde

BLYTHE — The Southwest High School track team swept its meets with Palo Verde here Thursday.

The Southwest boys won 86-41 while the girls were triumphant 79-48.

Jose Luis Salazar picked up three wins for the Southwest boys. He won the 110 hurdles (18.53), 300 (45.16) and triple jump (41-1).

Southwest's Terrence Johnson won the 100 (11.29) and 200 (25.23). Southwest's Sal Acevedo took the 800 (2:13.16) and the 1,600 (4:51). Also for the Eagles, Ernie Gradillas won the shot put (37-6), Brandon Pipken won the discus (112-9), Erick Thompson won the 3,200 (11:12.16) and Justin McCullough took the 400 (54.18). The Southwest team of McCullough, Mike Cisneros, Doug Fulp and Eric Holmes won the 4x400 (4:12.72).

Erica Holmes led the Eagle girls, winning the 100 (13.79), 200 (29.54) and the long jump (15.8.5).

Jennifer Black took the 100 hurdles (19.60) and the 300 hurdles (53.85) for the Eagles.

Erica Tally won the 800 (2:40.91) and Monica Hernandez won the 3,200 (13:01.75) for Southwest. The Eagle team of Denisse Moreno, Monica Gamboa, Tally and Tatia Earnest won the 4x400 (4:35.94).

The Eagles (3-3, 2-0 IVL) return to action at 3:15 p.m. Thursday at home against Calexico.
