Spartans pound Southwest 17-1

The Central Union High School tennis team hammered Southwest High 17-1 in Imperial Valley League action at Southwest's courts in El Centro on Friday.

The Spartans' No. 1 Tony Avila was perfect, defeating Southwest's No. 1 Idrees Suliman (6-0), No. 2 Kareem Salem (6-1) and No. 3 David Picciao (6-0).

Central's No. 2 Eddie Figueroa swept 6-0, 6-1, 6-0 as did No. 3 Ricky Montero 6-0, 6-2, 6-0.

The Spartans' No. 1 doubles team of Peter Barthleme and Leo Alvarado picked up three set wins, defeating Southwest's No. 1 Glen Shummard/Jake Park (6-1) and No. 2 Hector Bravo/Hiram Bravo (6-3). The Eagles did not field a No. 3 doubles team and forfeited all sets 6-0. Central's No. 2 Sam Kim/Mike Salgado won 6-0, 6-2, 6-0. The Spartans' No. 3 Karim Chee/Octavio Cortez won twice 6-2, 3-6, 6-0.

Central (4-3 IVL) will be back in action at 4:30 p.m. Monday at home against Brawley. The Eagles (4-3 IVL) return to action at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at home against Vincent Memorial.
