Border agents save immigrant in canal

April 09, 2001

CALEXICO — U.S. Border Patrol agents rescued an undocumented immigrant from drowning in the All-American Canal near here Sunday.

According to a press release from the Border Patrol, agents were observing six suspected undocumented immigrants crossing the All-American on a raft when the raft overturned, sending the passengers into the water.

Five of the immigrants swam to the north bank of the canal, while the sixth appeared to be drowning, the release states.

Agents then attempted to save the immigrant by deploying a floatation disc attached to a rope but the individual would not reach for it, the Border Patrol reports.

An agent then dove into the water and pulled the person to safety.
