BRAWLEY — Forty-four suspected undocumented immigrants from Mexico were apprehended here Friday by the U.S. Border Patrol's anti-smuggling unit.
Border Patrol agents were conducting surveillance at an apartment complex at 767 C St. when "suspicious activity" was observed in two apartments there, according to a Border Patrol press release.
After contacting those in the apartments, agents determined the people were undocumented immigrants, the release states.
The 44 were arrested around noon Friday and processed at the Border Patrol detention center in El Centro.
According to Border Patrol, the immigrants allegedly claimed they had paid $1,500 each to smugglers and had entered the United States near Calexico, staying in the apartments for two days.
Two of the immigrants were arrested on suspicion of having re-entered the country after being deported, a felony. The remainder were processed for voluntary return to Mexico, according to the press release.
