50 years ago — Central Junior College talked itself into top place at the Desert Speech Meet at Palo Verde College in Blythe on April 6. The Valley junior college beat Riverside College and Palo Verde College.

40 years ago — Blythe's Yellowjackets moved into a share of first place in the Imperial Valley League baseball standings with a 6-2 victory over the Calexico Bulldogs. The El Centro Spartans are tied for first.

30 years ago — Dr. Sheldon N. Rosen, a former doctor at Imperial General Hospital, who was fired last October, has written a nine-page affidavit to the U.S. Health, Education and Welfare Department claiming alleged deficiencies at the facility. Rosen said the hospital was understaffed and that some on the staff were undertrained.

20 years ago — Freshman Councilman Tony P. Tirado was elected mayor and William L. Moreno mayor pro tem at Tuesday's Calexico Council meeting by a 3-2 margin. The move annoyed Councilman Fred M. Knechel, who said he would have been the mayor if the normal rotation were followed Knechel had been mayor pro tem.
