Imperial 3, Mar Vista 2
SPRING VALLEY — The Imperial High School baseball team edged Mar Vista 3-2 in the first round of the San Diego Lions tournament here Monday.
Leading Imperial was Brett Cochran, who pitched seven innings, gave up two earned runs and struck out six. He also went 2-for-3 with a double.
Stewart Harvey also was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for the Tigers and D.J. Hastings finished 1-for-2 with a two-bagger.
In the victory the Tigers lost Ray Roben — who was leading the team in batting average at .379 — to what was reported as a broken ankle.
Imperial will play Escondido at 1:30 today.
Mira Mesa 12, Calexico 2
SAN DIEGO — The Calexico High baseball team fell 12-2 to Mira Mesa High School in the first day of the San Diego Lions tournament here Monday.
Taking the loss for Calexico was J.P. Gonzalez, who gave up three earned runs. He finished 3-for-3 at the plate.
Pedro Cazares went 2-for-2 and Chris Wong added two more hits for the Bulldogs.
Calexico plays University City High at 1:30 today.
Cathedral City 9, Central 2
CATHEDRAL CITY — The Central Union High baseball team dropped its opening game in the Coachella Valley tournament 9-2 to Cathedral City here Monday.
Taking the loss for Central was Jose Ibarra.
The Spartans play at 12:30 today.
Holtville 7, Fontana 3
COACHELLA — The Holtville High baseball team downed Fontana 7-3 in the first round of the Coachella Valley tournament here Monday.
A two-run double by Holtville's Isac Mejia in the seventh inning broke a 3-3 tie. Mejia finished 2-for-4 with two runs. Alex Navarro went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Vikings.
Edward Castro earned the win, pitching seven innings, giving up six hits, two earned runs and getting two strikeouts.
Holtville will be back in tournament action at 12:30 today.
