Eagle golfers take IVL meet

HOLTVILLE — The Southwest High School golf team won the five-team Imperial Valley League meet at the Barbara Worth Golf Resort here Monday.

Southwest finished with a score of 422 followed by Palo Verde with a 428. Central Union with a 432, Brawley Union with a 440 and Calexico with a 541.

Leading Southwest was Matt Mouser, who shot an 80, with Ty Yturralde turning in an 82. Justin Eyer and Cameron Bucher both shot 86s with Trevor Tagg turning in an 88.

Central's Mario Luna led all golfers with a 78. Beau Carson shot an 83 followed by Jake Beard's 85. Ivan Haro carded an 86 and Fernie Lynn shot a 100 for the Spartans.


Jorden Tucker led Brawley with an 80, followed by Michael Quick with an 88 and Brian Emmanuelli with an 89. Garrett Fargo shot a 91 and Adrian Martinez rounded things out for the Wildcats with a 92.

Leading Calexico was Ricardo Ortega with a 94, followed by a 95 from Eric Ugarte. Phillip Cheng shot a 103 and Edgar Ugarte turned in a 122 for the Bulldogs.

Southwest leads the IVL standings with 13 points, followed by Brawley and Central with 10, Palo Verde with nine points and Calexico with three.

Boys tennis

Central 12, Brawley 6

The Central Union High tennis team defeated Brawley Union High 12-6 in Imperial Valley League action in El Centro on Monday.

Leading Central (5-3 IVL) was its doubles teams, which accounted for seven points.

The No. 1 duo of Peter Barthelme/Leo Alvarado downed Brawley's No. 1 team of Matt Reyes/Grant Elmore 6-1, No. 2 Carlos Mendoza/Mike Garcia 6-0 and No. 3 Jacob Amidon/Robert Fernandez 6-1.

Ricky Montero/Mike Salgado, No. 2 for the Spartans, defeated Reyes/Elmore 6-0, and Mendoza/Garcia and Amidon/Fernandez both 6-3. Central's No. 3 pair, Karim Chee/Sam Kim, defeated Mendoza/Garcia 7-5 but lost to Reyes/Elmore 4-6 and Amidon/Fernandez 5-7.

Leading the Spartans' singles was No. 2 Eddie Figueroa, who defeated the Wildcats' No. 1, Doug Williams, and No. 2, Gilles Virgili, both 6-1, and No. 3, Trevor Finnell, 6-0.

Tony Avila, No. 1 for Central, lost to Williams 4-6, but got by Virgili 6-1 and Finnell 6-0. The Spartans' No. 3, Octavio Cortez, lost 1-6 to both Williams and Virgili and 3-6 to Finnell.

Brawley (4-3 IVL) hosts Calexico at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. Central hosts Vincent Memorial at 4:30 p.m. April 23.
