Parents face murder charges in death of daughter, 2

WESTMORLAND — A husband and wife were arrested Wednesday night on suspicion of killing their 2-year-old daughter Monday.

Westmorland police officers arrested John Anthony Titsworth, 23, and Hillary John Titsworth, 22, of Westmorland, around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday after investigating the death of their daughter, Kateland Marie Titsworth, investigating Officer Stephen Mistriel said.

Officer Freddie Beltran responded to a Westmorland residence at 7:24 p.m. Monday in reference to a 911 call about an unresponsive 2-year-old child, Mistriel said.

Kateland was transported to Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley with no vital signs. Beltran and emergency medical technicians performed CPR on the girl, Mistriel said.

Kateland was admitted to Pioneers at 8 p.m. and was pronounced dead around 9 p.m., Mistriel said.

Westmorland police officers began an investigation into Kateland's death, as required by law, interviewing her parents and other family members, Mistriel said.

Working with the Imperial County Sheriff's Office and the District Attorney's Office, Mistriel, Officer Eric Trevino and Chief Fred Beltran had enough evidence Wednesday to place the parents under arrest, Mistriel said.

Mistriel expects a formal complaint to be filed with the District Attorney's Office by Friday.

"Based on preliminary autopsy reports and statements made by the parents, evidence at the scene and reports by ER doctors" there was reason to believe Kateland's death was not an accident, Mistriel said.

A formal determination of the cause of Kateland's death is still pending toxicology and autopsy results, county Coroner's Office Investigator Gary Hayes said.

Hayes said he hopes to have the results back by the middle of next week.

The investigation is ongoing.

The Titsworths were booked into the county jail Wednesday, where they remained at press time today. Bail is set at $100,000 each.
