Bulldogs down Brawley 12-6

BRAWLEY — With a chilly wind blowing from the west, the Calexico High boys tennis team defeated Brawley Union High 12-6 here Wednesday to claim sole possession of first place in the Imperial Valley League.

Brawley won only two singles sets and Calexico claimed five more sets in doubles play.Brawley's No. 3 singles player, Doug Williams, was the lone Wildcat winner, taking a set from the Bulldogs' No. 2, Miguel Cota, and No. 3, Samuel Garcia. Calexico No. 1, Christian Cota, swept all three of his sets.

In doubles, the Wildcats' No. 2 pair of Matt Reyes/Grant Elmore swept, and Brawley's No. 1 pair of Jacob Amidon/Trevor Finnell took one from Calexico No. 2 pair Andre Barros/Steve Rivera.

Calexico coach David Gastelum said he was pleased to leave Brawley with a victory.

"It's great to win an away match," Gastelum said.

"I'm really proud of my team," he added. "They stepped up to the challenge and both my singles and doubles gave a strong performance."


He said he is confident going into the final round of league play and his team is beginning to play as a unit.

"Our team is coming around," Gastelum said. "We're ready to play the last round of league play as a team."

Brawley coach Mike Palacio was not disappointed with the defeat, conceding he thinks the Bulldogs are the league's strongest team.

"They were league champions last year and it looks like they might be champions again next year," Palacio said.

He said his squad played a touch match and he was pleased with its performance overall.

"We played better individually," Palacio said. "I can't hold any grudges against my team."

"We're going to continue to play better," Palacio added.

Calexico will travel to El Centro to play Southwest at 4:30 p.m. April 23 while the Wildcats will host Southwest on April 25.
