Softball: Spartans advance to title game

SAN DIEGO — Maria Perez pitched the Central Union High School softball team into the championship game of the Madison tournament here Wednesday.

Perez struck out six and allowed one hit to lead the Spartans to a 1-0 win over Montgomery High.

Perez scored the game's only run after Central's Marissa Guzman hit a fly ball to left that was mishandled. Perez had reached base on an error.

The Spartans will take on an opponent to be determined for the title today.

Clairemont 6, Brawley 4

SAN DIEGO — The Brawley Union High School softball team was knocked from the Madison tournament by Clairemont High 6-4 here Wednesday.

Leighan Sudduth took the loss.

Kaylin Rubin led Brawley with two hits and two RBIs.

The Wildcats return to action at 3:15 today at Palm Desert.

Southwest wins two


SAN DIEGO — The Southwest High School softball team picked up two wins and three losses at the Warhawk Easter Invitational here this week.

The Eagles won their first two games on Monday, beating Morse High 6-0 and Horizon High 9-2.

Monica Lopez got the pitching decision against Morse and Lisa Garcia picked up the win against Horizon.

Things went sour for Southwest after that. The Eagles lost to Eastlake of Chula Vista 3-1 and Point Loma 4-2 on Tuesday. Southwest finished with a 4-0 loss to University High on Wednesday.

Southwest will be back in action at 4:15 p.m. April 24 at Central in El Centro.
