50 years ago — Building construction permits in El Centro amounted to $3,000 a day for the first 12 days of the month; $15,900 was for construction of three homes.

40 years ago — Room rates at Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley will be increased $2 a day after July 1. This will be the second increase within two years. Last year the board of directors voted for a dollar-a-day increase.

30 years ago — Cattlemen from all over the state trooped into the Brawley Elks Lodge for the eighth annual convention of the California Feeders Association. More than 30 cattlemen were expected for the day-long sessions.

20 years — Averaging 15 strikeouts per game, Rhonda Valdez has pitched the Chargerettes to four straight victories in the minor division of El Centro Junior Girls Softball Association. The Wildcats tested the Chargerettes Monday night and Valdez struck out 15 and grabbed a 6-2 victory.
