Eagles soar to wins over Bulldogs

The Southwest High boys and girls track teams downed the Calexico Bulldogs in close meets between previously undefeated teams in El Centro on Thursday.

The Southwest boys won 72-55 while the Southwest girls won 74-53.

"I'm very impressed. Calexico was really strong," said Southwest head coach Mike Becker.

Jose Luis Salazar had a big day for the Eagles, winning the 110 meter hurdles in 15.6 seconds, the triple jump at 41 feet 10-1/2 inches and the 300 hurdles in 44.01.

The Eagles' Terrance Johnson took the 100 in 11.02 and the 200 in 23.13.

Southwest's Justin McCullough won the 400 in 52 seconds and teamed with Eric Holmes Phillip Zamudio and Doug Fulp to win the 4x400 relay in 3.40 minutes.

Sal Acevedo won the 1,600 for Southwest in 4.40.09.

Nathan Armstrong had a big day for the Bulldogs, winning the long jump at 20-11, the high jump at 5-8 and the 4x100 relay with teammates Ralph Galvan, David Paco and Jose Chavez in 44.6.


Calexico's Alex Maeda won the shot put at 45-5 1/2, and the discus with a throw of 121 feet.

Calexico's Luis Zepeda won the 800 in 2.07.07.

For the Southwest girls, Erika Holmes and Erika Talley had big days.

Holmes won the 100 in 12.09, the long jump at 15-8 1/2, the 200 in 26.08, and the 4x100 with teammates Jackie Gomez, Stephanie Conant and Monica Gamboa in 52.08.

Talley won the 800 in 2.34 and teamed with Denise Moreno, Gamboa and Tasha Ernest to take the 4x400 really in 4.17.06.

Southwest's Denise Ramos won the 1,600 in 5.46.01 while teammate Jennifer Black won the 300 hurdles in 52.05 and the high jump at 4-6.

For the Bulldogs, Lisa Tittle won the 100 hurdles in 18.08 and the triple jump at 27-10.

Calexico's Melissa Williams, won the discus with a 98-6, Nancy Ramirez the shot put at 28-7, Alicia Torres the 400 in 1.02.7 and Joanna Garcia the 3,200 in 13.12.

"They performed very well," said Calexico head coach Cal Armstrong of his Bulldogs.

"We needed depth in some areas," he added.

Becker said, "We had a great performance, I'm overjoyed and proud of their efforts."

Calexico (3-1 IVL boys and girls), returns to action April 26 against in Brawley.

Southwest (3-0 IVL boys and girls) travels Saturday to compete in the Jaguar Invitational at Valley Center.
