Voice: Centinela prison employees want to be treated like other prison workers

April 14, 2001

Employees represented by California State Employees Association at Centinela State Prison are very upset with the Department of Personal Administration recent decision to hold our recruitment and retention pay for negotiation.

This means they expect us to give up something for these state employees to receive equal treatment when compared to employees at the three other state prisons in the extreme southern desert.

All staff at Ironwood, Chuckawalla and Calipatria prisons were given R&R pay years ago without negotiations give-backs. Centinela correctional officers were given R&R pay two years ago. The rest of the staff has been in a struggle with an insensitive administration until recently. George Giurbino, warden (A) showed compassion and fairness when he pushed CDC to approve our R&R.

We are asking for help from citizens, other state workers, politicians and anyone else who values fairness to pressure DPA and Gov. Gray Davis to treat us equally to our peers around us. We demand equality!
