50 years ago — Richard L. Berry, former business manager of the Imperial Ball Club, has been named deputy county probation officer. Berry took office yesterday, replacing R.M. Thomas, who was called back into the Marine Corps.

40 years ago — Voting was light throughout the Valley in the morning session of the countywide school board election. It had been estimated a little over 20 percent would turn out.

30 years ago — Congressman Victor Veysey is expected to discuss the possibility of a new sugar cane industry for the Imperial Valley when he speaks before the annual meeting of the Imperial County Farm Bureau.

20 years ago — Ever since the 1979 earthquake, the El Centro sewage plant has been plagued with problems. Local residents have complained about its smell; the state Regional Water Quality Control board has cautioned the city about its poor operation and maintenance procedures.
