Remnants of restaurant burn

April 16, 2001|By KELLY GRANT, Staff Writer

SALTON CITY — A fire that burned the remnants of an abandoned restaurant here Saturday is under investigation by the Imperial County Fire Department.

Salton City firefighters responded to the fire, which began around 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the abandoned Sundowner Restaurant at Highway 22 and Highway 86, said County Fire Capt. Lon Hettinger.

The blaze apparently started at two points, raising firefighters' suspicions, Hettinger said.

The former restaurant was being dismantled, the parts sold for scrap, by a crew from Mexico, Hettinger said, adding the crew had not been working Saturday.

Investigators are looking at two people as suspects, although no arrests have been made, Hettinger said.

The investigation in ongoing.

The Sundowner Hotel, which sat adjacent to the restaurant, was leveled by flames in April 1998. Investigators suspected arson in that fire, too.

Further information was unavailable at presstime.
