Van goes off road

six hurt

IN-KO-PAH — Six Mexicali residents suffered injuries after the van in which they were traveling went off the side of a mountain road on Interstate 8 just east of here.

A California Highway Patrol press release stated a van carrying six people was heading east on Interstate 8 about 2:55 p.m. Saturday when for an unknown reason it went off the roadway.

The driver, Lucio Hernandez, 32, was taken to El Centro Regional Medical Center and treated for minor injuries. Investigators did not know if he was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

Maria Sandoval, 33, and Theresa Hernandez, 55, had major injuries and were both transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego. Hernandez was wearing a seat belt, Sandoval was not.


Donisio Duarte, 62, Daniel Duarte, 9, and Luisa Duarte, 6, were taken to El Centro Regional for minor injuries. Daniel was wearing a seat belt, and it was unknown whether Donisio and Luisa Duarte were wearing seat belts.

The accident is still under investigation.

Information on individual conditions of those injured was not available at press time this morning.
