Supervisor Wyatt recovering from heart surgery

April 16, 2001|By RUDY YNIGUEZ, Staff Writer

SAN DIEGO — County Supervisor Gary Wyatt underwent unexpected heart bypass surgery Saturday and is recovering at Scripps Mercy Hospital here.

Close family friend and Sheriff's Chief Deputy Chuck Jernigan said Wyatt's family would like to thank all the well-wishers who have called and sent flowers.

Jernigan said Wyatt, 48, should be home in several days and ready to receive guests in seven to 10 days.

"He won't miss a beat," Jernigan said.

Wyatt had been experiencing chest pains on occasion since February and some slight angina, Jernigan said, adding that Wyatt's father recently had bypass surgery. He said Wyatt went in for an angiogram Friday and the doctor decided surgery was needed.

Jernigan praised the efforts and professionalism of cardiac surgeon Dr. Fakhri Salem and Scripps's staff.

County spokesman Rob Zimmer said the surgery went well, that Wyatt is out of intensive care and the doctor expects a full and prompt recovery.

Zimmer said Wyatt should be back at work in about three weeks.
