50 years ago — A turtle and a goat led the list of pets entered in the April 21 Los Vigilantes-Merchants pet parade in El Centro. Twenty-five entries have been received for the parade, which will proceed on Main Street.

40 years ago — A break in the Westside Main Canal about two miles north of Brawley was repaired by Imperial Irrigation District's bulldozers yesterday. Although water reached Highway 99, it was unnecessary to close the road, an IID spokesman said.

30 years ago — Anyone who called Holtville's 1-0 victory over Eagle Mountain easy might get an argument from Mike Sudduth. Sudduth, the Vikings' senior left-hander, hurled a 13- strikeout no-hitter at the Eagles.

20 years ago — Sheriff Oren Fox said today an internal investigation is under way into alleged brutality against inmates at the county minimum security facility. Fox says he's investigating claims that more than a half dozen federal prisoners may have been involved in alleged mistreatment by one or more deputies.
