Brawley man allegedly stabbed during dispute with neighbor

April 19, 2001|By KELLY GRANT, Staff Writer

BRAWLEY — A man here allegedly stabbed his neighbor in his front yard after an argument Wednesday night.

Brawley police responded to the 1400 block of C Street at 8:41 p.m. after receiving a call about a disturbance between two neighbors, said Lt. Henry Graham.

When officers arrived they found Jason Gonzales, 20, had been stabbed once in his left torso, Graham said.

Officers recovered the weapon, a 5-inch fixed blade knife, and detained two people, a female witness and a male suspect. The witness was later released, but Juan Jose Tabarez, 30, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, Graham said.

The two men had been arguing when Tabarez allegedly crossed into Gonzales' front yard and stabbed him.

Gonzales was transported to Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley for treatment. Information about his condition was unavailable this morning, although Graham said the injuries did not appear life-threatening.

Tabarez was booked into county jail and remained there this morning on $20,000 bail.

Graham did not know what the argument between the men was about, but did say it has been an ongoing dispute that escalated Wednesday night.
