50 years ago — John Wayne made a special preview showing of the film he produced in Mexico, "Bullfighter and the Lady," for Mexicali officials and Imperial Valley civic leaders in the Calexico Fox Theater this morning.

40 years ago — Verne Harris, Calexico High School athletic director and head football, basketball and track coach, resigned to accept a position in an Anaheim school district.

30 years ago — An estimate by U.S. engineers that it would cost $1.3 million to solve the rising salinity problem in the Salton Sea was not only way too high but kept the Salton Sea from getting a favorable priority as it should have, according to Congressman Victor V. Veysey.

20 years ago — Valley growers are not too happy about the latest two men nominated to the Agricultural Labor Relations Board by Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr. At least that was the reaction of growers who knew anything about the two names submitted by Brown to the state Senate for confirmation.
