50 years ago — About 254 pets, pushed or pulled by their owners, took part in yesterday's pet parade in El Centro. More than 3,000 people lined Main Street to watch the event.

40 years ago — A truck breakdown has stranded eight donkeys somewhere near Fresno and has canceled the donkey basketball game originally scheduled for tonight in Brawley Union High School.

30 years ago — After a six-hour secret meeting, the Board of Supervisors adopted a 1971-72 schedule of salary increases for department heads, including a $168 monthly boost for themselves. The 28 percent increase raised the salary to $768 monthly. The supervisors are also paid $100 monthly for in-county travel and $50 monthly for inspecting county roads.

20 years ago — If the world seems to be moving under your feet, you may be one of those sensitive souls feeling a swarm of small earthquakes that began Tuesday morning and was continuing today. The Imperial Valley's Northend had been quivering for more than 24 hours with dozens of small earthquakes, according to seismologists of the California Institute of Technology.
