Our Opinion: Racing for life

April 23, 2001

The American Cancer Society is waging an important battle and it is good to see people in the Imperial Valley willing to do their part to help in the fight.

The society is striving to raise funds to support those dealing with their own battles with cancer. The money will go toward saving lives. For years the Cancer Society had fund-raising events locally and this year it is good to see the local chapter started the Relay for Life.

It is a positive event that allows for more community involvement and it allows people to see there are a great many people in the Imperial Valley dealing with cancer. Groups of people formed teams and for 24 hours walked the track at Southwest High School in El Centro. Each team raises money. There were some 40 teams participating in the relay.

We hope to see the Relay for Life become an annual event, one that brings people together for an important cause — life. We also hope people build their awareness about the disease that kills millions every year. The more awareness people build, the sooner we may find cures to some types of cancer.

Research has come a long way to fight certain cancers, but there is a long way to go to wipe out the disease. That is why events such as Relay for Life make a difference. We know the fight is ongoing and the disease will continue to be prevalent in society. Thus we need to continue raising money to help those suffering from the disease, and, more importantly, surviving the disease.

We credit all those who helped organize and participated in Relay for Life. We are sure in years to come the event will grow.

We also credit those in the American Cancer Society who give of their time to make a difference in our community. Their efforts could someday help researchers find a cure. In the meantime, their efforts touch so many lives by their helping those dealing with cancer to feel a little less alone in their struggle.

Finally, those suffering from the disease deserve a great deal of praise for their courage. They deserve our respect and admiration, for they teach us how precious life is.
