50 years ago — Niland residents are planing the annual Tomato Festival for April 28-29. The event will open with the town's children parading through the streets.

40 years ago — The Chuting Stars, a naval parachute team, will perform at the El Centro Naval Air Auxiliary Field. The team will appear with the Blue Angels, the Navy's flight demonstration team.

30 years ago — Four El Centro women have been nominated for the 11th annual "Mother of the Year" contest sponsored by KXO radio of El Centro. Last year's winner was Mrs. Nancy Macklin who was sponsored by the El Centro Pilot Club.

20 years ago — In Brawley most didn't feel a thing, but Southend residents were rocked by a 3.0 earthquake at 10:15 p.m. Wednesday. No damage was reported.
