Man arrested after alleged assault

April 23, 2001|By KELLY GRANT, Staff Writer

IMPERIAL — A man was arrested near here Saturday on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after hitting another man in the face with a shovel.

Imperial County Sheriff's Office deputies were called to a disturbance in progress at Trentham and Worthington roads around 7 a.m., said Sheriff's Office Sgt. Delfino Matus.

The victim, Arturo Torres, 49, of Imperial, was bleeding from his face and had mud on his face. He said he'd been assaulted by an employee who hit him with an irrigation shovel, Matus said.

The assault appears to have come as a result of an argument about work or the length of time it was taking to do the work, Matus said.

Though Matus did not know exactly how the victim and suspect were working together, he did say Torres had been irrigating a field and that the suspect, Gregorio A. Rochin, 55, of Imperial, also was a foreman.

Rochin was arrested at the scene and booked into county jail Saturday on $20,000 bail. He was released to a bondsman at 11:14 p.m. that night.
