Calexico edges Southwest

Finishing with a 9-9 set tie, the Calexico High School tennis team narrowly edged Southwest 79-77 on points in Imperial Valley League action in El Centro on Monday.

Leading Calexico was the play of its singles squad, accounting for 50 points.

Chris Cota, the Bulldogs' No. 1, won all three of his sets 6-3, 6-2, 6-1. Calexico's No. 3, Miguel Cota, won 6-4, 6-2, 6-1. Samuel Garcia, the Bulldogs' No. 2, won one set 6-2.

On doubles, No. 1 for Calexico, Jesus Leo/Joseph Alvarez, were victorious once at 7-6 (7-5). The Bulldogs' No. 3 duo, Anthony Castallanos/Jair Hernandez, also won a set 6-2. The No. 2 pair of Andre Barros/Steve Rivera lost all three sets.

Both teams play at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday with Calexico playing at Central Union High and Southwest playing at Brawley.
