50 years ago — Central Union High School music students returned from an annual state band festival in Fullerton yesterday. They participated along with 2,000 students from throughout the state.

40 years ago — Ann Sperber of Holtville is one of the first four coeds to be admitted to the previously all-male Kellogg campus of the California State Polytechnic College. Miss Sperber is active in numerous clubs and lists English and math as her favorite subjects.

30 years ago — More than 150 mentally handicapped youngsters from Imperial County will participate in the second annual Imperial Valley Special Olympics. The meet, open to the public, will give youngsters an opportunity to compete in athletic events with others of comparable skills.

20 years ago — Six persons, including a 14-year-old girl, were arrested in Imperial County and San Bernardino Thursday after an elderly vacationer was robbed, beaten and then left for dead in a shallow grave east of Niland, the Sheriff's Office reported today. Sheriff Oren Fox said the suspects include two adults and four juveniles and the pending charges facing each of the six suspects involve attempted murder, kidnapping, robbery and mayhem.
