April 24, 2001|By Kelly Grant, Staff Writer

Six people sustained minor injuries in a three-vehicle collision Monday when a van ran a stop sign at the intersection of Meloland and Chick roads south of Interstate 8 between El Centro and Holtville.

Raul Arredondo Ramirez, 66, of Pomona was driving a van west on Chick Road at 1:10 p.m. when he failed to observe a posted stop sign, according to a California Highway Patrol press release.

As Ramirez went through the intersection, his van broadsided a sport-utility vehicle traveling south on Meloland Road. The SUV subsequently hit a sedan stopped for the stop sign in the eastbound lane of Chick Road.

The driver of the SUV, Juan Murillo, 80, of Calexico, sustained minor injuries.

The driver of the sedan, Maria Arroyo, 23, of Calexico, was uninjured.

Ramirez and his four passengers — Teresa Ramirez, 55, Maria Ramirez, 84, and Juana De Acevedo, 51, all of Mexicali, and Estel Ramirez, 63, of Pomona — sustained minor injuries.
