April 25, 2001|By KELLY GRANT, Staff Writer

WINTERHAVEN — Imperial Irrigation District maintenance workers found the body of a drowning victim floating in the All-American Canal near here Tuesday morning.

IID employees were checking equipment when they discovered the man's body, said Imperial County Coroner's Office Investigator Gary Hayes.

According to Sheriff's Office logs, IID employees called to report a body in the All American Canal at 6:18 a.m.

The Sheriff's Office dive team recovered the body from the canal, Hayes said.

The man, listed as John Doe because no identification was found on the body, was in his 30s and may have been a Mexican national trying to cross illegally into the United States, Hayes said.

An autopsy determined the man died of drowning, Hayes said. The body had been in the water for a couple of days, he added.

There was no indication of foul play, Hayes said.
