BRAWLEY — The Brawley Union High School softball team had little trouble with Calexico, knocking off the Bulldogs 8-1 in Imperial Valley League action here Tuesday.

Leighan Sudduth led the Wildcat charge, banging four hits and striking out 11 in picking up the win.

"We played real well," said Brawley coach Rahsahn Overton. "We hit the ball nicely and we had a couple of girls do some big things."

The Wildcats definitely had a couple of girls do some big things, but the day belonged to Sudduth. She finished 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs. On the mound she limited the Bulldogs to four hits.

With the game scoreless in the third inning, Brawley jumped on the board with runs scored by Marissa Vasquez and Kaylin Rubin.

The Bulldogs pulled the score to 2-1 in the fifth when Erika Zamora singled to lead off the inning. After Sudduth struck out the next two hitters, Zamora scored on an error by the right fielder.

While it looked like the contest might be close, Brawley broke open the game with three runs in the fifth. Sudduth had a hit and scored a run. Rubin had a hit, scored a run and drove in another, Ebony Lofton had a hit and scored a run and Reggie Horta had an RBI double.

Brawley finished its scoring binge in the sixth The Wildcats scored three runs in an inning hi-lighted by a Sudduth hit misplayed by Calexico's right fielder into a two-run inside-the-park home run. Rubin followed Sudduth with a base hit. She took second on a passed ball, moved to third on a base hit and scored on a double steal.

Sudduth finished off the Bulldogs with flair, striking out four of the final six hitters.

Overton thinks the difference for his squad was last week's spring break.

"We had a little bit of time to get some good practice sessions in," he said. "The girls were geared up to go and it looks like it's paying off."

The Wildcats improve to 12-7, 4-2 with the win and occupy third place in the IVL. However, Overton is not ready to concede anything yet.

"I always think there's a chance," he said of the possibility of his team taking the IVL title. "As long as the girls come to play there's a chance of anything."

Brawley returns to action at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Southwest in El Centro. Calexico will next play at 4:15 p.m. Friday at home against Central.
