Brim has 90 days left on PMH contract

April 25, 2001|By ANTHONY LONGORIA, Staff Writer

BRAWLEY — Following a vote by the Pioneers Memorial Hospital District board Monday night to terminate its management contract with Brim Healthcare Inc., board members said yesterday Brim has 90 days until the contract officially terminates.

"At this time, Brim has said they will work with us for the entire three months," said board President Marcus Tapia.

Chief Executive Officer Richard Mendoza and Chief Financial Officer Dan Heckathorne have both agreed to continue to work for the hospital until July, when Brim's contract officially terminates, said Tapia.

Mendoza and Heckathorne are Brim employees.

With the loss of Brim, Tapia said the district will have to hire consultant services to help the district through the accreditation it will undergo next March.

The district's contract with Brim provided consultant services for the accreditation.

The district also will lose its two top managers when the Brim contract terminates, but Tapia said the board hopes to have a new CEO and CFO before the accreditation and will begin a search soon.

The hospital board approved a contract with Brim last year that paid the firm $590,000 per year plus an annual increase after the second year based on increases in the consumer price index.

The contract allowed the board to terminate the contract, without cause after the first contract year.

Brim has managed the hospital for 14 years.
