April 26, 2001|By TIM YANNI, Sports Writer

With temperatures approaching 100 degrees, the Calexico High tennis team edged Central Union High 10-8 in El Centro on Wednesday and pulled within a victory of clinching the Imperial Valley League championship.

The Bulldogs were led by the solid play of No. 1 singles player Chris Cota. Calexico's top player stopped Central's No. 1 Eddie Figueroa 7-6, No. 2 John Harmon 6-0 and No. 3 Alex Lopez 6-0.

The Bulldogs No. 2, Samuel Garcia, won twice 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 as did No. 3 Miguel Cota 5-7, 6-0, 6-1.

"It was great." said Calexico coach David Gastelum. "It was a really tough match and we won the important sets."

He said with the 8-2 IVL record, the Bulldogs are only a victory from clinching the league championship.

In doubles, the Spartans fared a little better, but the Bulldogs still won when they needed to with Calexico's No. 3 pair of Anthony Castellanos/Juan Gallardo topping Central's No. 2 Ricky Montero/Tony Avila 6-4 to preserve the victory.

Central's No. 1 pair of Peter Barthelme/Leo Alvarado swept all three sets, while No. 3 team of Karim Chee/Sam Kim nabbed one set, a 6-1 victory over Calexico No. 1 pair Jair Hernandez/Joseph Alvarez.

Gastelum gave credit to the Spartans: "Central came out here playing a really strong match and in the end, it just came down to some key points that we were able to capitalize on."

Central coach Bob Macholtz said that the loss was tough but he was proud of his team's performance.

"We were in a position to get ourselves into first place," Macholtz explained. "The guys really wanted it. We just didn't produce the kind of tennis that we needed.

"Hats off to Calexico because they played extremely well," he added."

He said he wants his team to remain focused and is confident going into Central's next match.

The Spartans next play at Brawley at 4:15 p.m. Monday while the Bulldogs are set to host Vincent Memorial at the same date and time.

Southwest 11, Brawley 7

BRAWLEY — Southwest No. 1 singles player John Bonano swept all three Brawley singles players and Southwest's doubles teams took all but two sets as the Eagles topped Brawley 11-7 here Wednesday.

Brawley's No. 2 pair of Sutton Morgan/Grant Elmore and No. 3 duo of Jay Carlos Mendez/Mike Garcia beat Southwest's No. 3 Joe Kaye/Glenn Shummard, 7-5 and 6-2 respectively.

Southwest coach Genaro Pineiro said he was pleased with the win.

"Considering we placed second to last last year, we're playing with a lot of pride," Pineiro said.

"We've improved to become a contender for the IVL championships next year."

The Eagles host Vincent Memorial at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, while the Wildcats will next take on Central Union High at home at 4:15 p.m. Monday.
