Voice: Another reader asks, is it time to split the IID?

April 27, 2001

Matthew 6:24: "No one can serve two masters. Either they will hate the one and love the other, or they will be devoted to the one and despise the other."

Although the context is different, it did get me thinking in that direction regarding the Imperial Irrigation District Board of Directors.

The power department from this time forward will require our Valley's finest leaders, to secure cheap power sources, stay ahead of environmental problems, (i.e. $800,000 fines from oil-burning generators) and all the different concerns facing California power users.

The water department is in the same predicament. Once again it will require our Valley's finest to lead the Imperial Valley in constant water negotiations, environmental issues, TMDLs and costs analysis.

My question is, can five IID board members be that knowledgeable about all issues concerning both water and power? The answer is no. But five community leaders for water issues, and five community leaders for power issues, can be very persuasive and passionate in their respective areas of expertise.

This power and water user thinks it is time to explore the possibilities of two boards.
