Brawl erupts between suspected gang members in El Centro

April 28, 2001|By AARON CLAVERIE, Staff Writer

Fighting broke out in the front yard of an El Centro home early Saturday when suspected gang members piled out of three cars and confronted more than 10 people waiting for them.

El Centro Police responded to a call from the home of Deon Brooks in the 3000 block of Eucalyptus Street.

Sergeant Gordon Johnson said officers responded under the premise there were guns and bats being used in the brawl.

Johnson said when officers arrived the combatants immediately fled. No weapons were found.

There were no reports of shots fired and no one was seriously injured.

According to police logs, one of the suspected gang members might have been hit in the chest with a bat.

Johnson said that individual told police he had an asthmatic condition. He was treated and released from El Centro Regional Medical Center.

Brooks told police the suspected gang members attacked him because they blame him for the arrest of one of their members.

El Centro police were tipped off there might be trouble with the alleged gang members earlier in the night when a woman made an anonymous call just after midnight Saturday.

She said three cars full of gang members were cruising the streets looking for someone after leaving a party.

Four hours later, some of the men she identified were fighting in front of Brook's house. The cars she reported matched the cars that fled the scene from Brook's house.

El Centro police said no arrests were made.
