Voice: Implementation of AB 537 promotes harmful agenda

April 28, 2001

On April 5, California State Schools Superintendent Delaine Eastin issued a letter to all school districts informing them that a task force had been appointed to develop strategies for the implementation of AB 537, the "California Student Safety and Violence Act of 2000."

The pre-publication edition of this report contains disturbing recommendations meant to promote the acceptance of different sexual orientations and gender identities. A few of the objectionable strategies posed for kindergarten through the 12th grades include (1) ensuring that educational resources and reading materials addressing all forms of sexual orientation are available to students, (2) visual images depicting all sexual orientations and gender identities are to be posted for use in common areas throughout the school year, (3) guidelines shall be developed to reduce the adverse impact of gender segregation related to locker rooms, restrooms and dress codes.

The draft copy of this report also included a recommendation to remove the requirement for parental approval for their child to participate in a Healthy Kids Survey — this is no longer posed as a strategy, but it's amazing that it was even considered!

Once these strategies are issued by the Department of Education in final form they should be summarily rejected, as they threaten to destroy the innocence of our children and serve to violate the principles of church and state separation. Children should be afforded equal access to education, but they should not be indoctrinated by poorly devised schemes serving only to promote a certain agenda that history has already shown to be harmful to society.
