Voice: Wal-Mart helping local schools

April 28, 2001

So much for taking us into the new millennium. Come on, Calexico City Council, stand up and serve the people. You talk the talk, now walk the walk. How is it possible that the "big box" ordinance became an issue?

You are hereby reminded, City Council, that you are here to serve the people of Calexico and not a select few. Local businesses, don't be afraid of change.

I can truly testify how much Wal-Mart gives back to the community. Can local merchants say the same? No one here has gone as far as Wal-Mart with the double your money student fund-raising program. Students are allowed to fund raise on Wal-Mart property at no cost. In 1999 our AVID class raised $1,000 and Wal-Mart gave us an additional $1,000. Wow! Who can beat that? And why not support Wal-Mart when they support our local clubs, organizations and schools.
