State budget may have nada for Nosotros Park

CALEXICO — There might not be any money in the 2002 state budget to fund the completion of Nosotros Park, according to California Assembly budget chairman Tony Cardenas.

"Gov. Gray Davis just spent another billion dollars last week," Cardenas said Saturday.

Cardenas, assemblyman for the San Fernando Valley's 39th District, was in town to give the keynote speech at the second annual youth empowerment conference at San Diego State University-Imperial Valley campus.

After the speech, he discussed the effort to finish building the half-completed park near the Casas del Sol housing projects.

At Tuesday's Calexico Redevelopment Agency meeting, the agency board voted to hold off appropriating $500,000 toward the park until June 1 to give the Imperial Valley's assemblyman, Dave Kelley, more time to lobby for funding.

Cardenas said it is unlikely the Legislature will have even a rough outline of the budget by the June 1 deadline.

He said he isn't sure the budget will be complete by the June 15 deadline because general fund money is totally tied up in the energy crisis.

Kelley has put in a funding request but said if that doesn't work he will attempt to find funding in parks and recreation bonds.
