LVA/IV and I.V. Press' partnership in literacy celebrates its 13th year

May 01, 2001

Literacy Volunteers of America/Imperial Valley chapter and the Imperial Valley Press have joined for the past 13 years to sponsor a spelling bee to raise funds for LVA/IV.

Traditionally each team has consisted of three members, a team captain and two additional spellers. This year, in an effort to create interest in the next generation, the LVA has added a junior speller to each team. Junior spellers are 10 to 16 years old and have not yet graduated from high school.

Each year, participation is limited to the first 11 organizations that apply. Eleven teams are all that can be managed in the time frame available. Last year's teams came from a wide variety of community organizations.

The winning team was the Optimist Club led by Bob Fisher.

The following teams were all part of the hotly contested race for first place: Brawley Soroptimists, Brawley Kiwanis, Valley Independent Bank, Government Agencies Federal Credit Union, Pioneers Memorial Hospital, El Centro Kiwanis, Centinela State Prison, Calipatria State Prison, Desert Valley Library Media Association and Chromalloy Corp.

An added attraction last year was cheerleading sections for each of the teams. Costumes, chants, noisemakers and extra points were all part of the fun. Team spirit was intense with that added element, and it will continue in Thursday's contest.

All teams contacted reported they enjoyed the spirit of competition and knowing that they were giving back to the community. They plan to continue the tradition this year.
