clean up liquid fertilizer spill

PALO VERDE — Imperial County firefighters, with the help of firefighters from El Centro and Brawley, cleaned about 1,000 gallons of liquid fertilizer from Highway 78 south of this community this morning.

While the cleanup was considered a hazardous material situation, the fertilizer did not represent a threat to people, according to County Firefighter Paul Villa.

The fertilizer spilled following a traffic accident about 2 a.m. on Highway 78 near Milpitas Wash south of Palo Verde.

While information was not available on the accident, tanks on the truck carrying the fertilizer started to leak and some 1,000 gallons spilled.
