Voice: Ladies and gentlemen: Slow down your engines

May 03, 2001

Ed Woeten from Imperial wrote a very good letter recently concerning the high speed and ignorant tail-gating drivers who now plague our roadways. Geez, remember slow down and saves lives and gasoline, too.

Not everyone who lives in this seemingly desert test track of Imperial County can afford to be speeding. The price of regular unleaded gasoline is soon going to be $2.25 a gallon here in Imperial County.

Most of the time the cars that pass by you, cruising at close to warp speed, are members of the "flying on Highway 86 group."

Leave earlier. Slow and steady wins the race, so the proverbial phrase goes. Evidence has shown that when one vehicle drives at 70 mph and another drives at 55 mph the time difference from point A to point B is only a matter of minutes. We have to C how we can save money and save lives. This problem can have a simple solution.

I hope Rep. Duncan Hunter reads this letter and will push this idea back into Congress. President Gerald R. Ford made an excellent decision when he lowered the maximum speed limit to 55 mph back in the 1970s. President Ford helped to save lives and gasoline for the United States. Let us learn from the past, Mr. Bush.
