50 years ago — Glenn Brockway, regional director of the U.S. employment service in San Francisco, warned the Imperial Valley Farms Association that it must immediately stop using illegal Mexican labor. He warned that everyone using "wetback" labor will be denied the use of legally contracted Mexican farm workers.

40 years ago — Boaters may look forward to an improved launching ramp at Red Hill Marina within the three weeks it will take to build the ramp. The county's cost will be about $5,000. The Calipatria Boat Club will take part in filling in a swampy area and building a parking lot.

30 years ago — Permission to negotiate a lease on a 2-acre parcel near the New River to build a plant designed to conduct an experimental program in obtaining minerals from the water was given today by the Imperial Irrigation District Board of Directors.

20 years ago — Rudy Seanez didn't allow a hit and struck out 16 in six innings Saturday as the Cubs beat the Braves in a Brawley Little League game.
