Wildcats put finishing touches on perfect season

BRAWLEY — The Brawley Union High boys and girls swim teams finished undefeated in league after beating the Imperial Tigers on Thursday.

The boys final score was Brawley 113, Imperial 48 and the girls final score was Brawley 125, Imperial 40.

The Brawley boys and girls both won 10 of the 11 events.

For the Brawley boys, senior Mark McConnell had a big afternoon, winning two individual events and helping win two relays.

McConnell won the 500 meter freestyle in 6:21.99 minutes and the 100 backstroke in 1:09.43.

McConnell, with Robbie Overstreet, Spencer Kellogg and Jeremy Schmidt won the 200 medley relay in 2:08.26 and the 400 freestyle relay in 4:03.74.

"I thought we did very well," said McConnell.

"I'm pretty excited about the IVL finals next week. It's something we work really hard for all year," added McConnell.

Overstreet took the 200 freestyle in 2:12.20 and Schmidt won the 200 individual medley in 2:46.15.


Brawley's Jeremy Schoch took the 100 butterfly in 1:23.22 and the 200 freestyle relay with teammates Kienan Huber, Jared Stodelle and Henry Graham in 1:59.31.

Kellogg took the 50 freestyle in 26.33 and the 100 freestyle in 1:00.29.

Imperial's Tony Deen won the 100 breaststroke in 1:17.96.

On the girls side, Brawley Lauren Roberts reached CIF consideration time in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:21.29.

"I had a good day. I improved my time in the breaststroke," said Roberts.

Roberts teamed with Stephanie Luckey, Brooke Pace and Jennifer Cardenas to win the 200 medley relay in 2:05.29 and with Danae Smith, Tracey King and Marianne Wenzel to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:52.42.

Cardenas, Smith, Wenzel and Pace won the 400 freestyle relay in 4:08.48.

Pace took the 100 freestyle in 59.57 and the 50 freestyle in 27.25.

Cardenas won the 200 freestyle in 2:12.56 and the 100 butterfly in 1:04.08.

Luckey won the 500 freestyle in 6:10.94 and the 100 backstroke in 1:11.09.

Imperial's Heather Jackson won the 200 individual medley in 2:44.53.

Imperial head coach Chris Fowlkes said, "We did really good. We had our ups and down and almost all of our swimmers improved but Brawley is so strong that it didn't really show."

Brawley coach Nancy Kellogg said, "They're getting psyched over the finals next week. All the kids put in their best performance today and they're all working well as a team."

The Tiger boys finish 3-2-1 while the girls finish 0-6.

Both teams will compete in the IVL finals at 4 p.m. Thursday at Brawley.
