Brush fire erupts near Winterhaven

May 04, 2001

WINTERHAVEN — Fire departments across the Imperial Valley responded to a brush fire here Thursday only to find the blaze nearly extinguished upon arrival.

The fire at Arnold and Cocopah roads started shortly after 3 p.m., said Imperial County fire Capt. Lon Hettinger.

Thinking a nearby trailer park and Imperial Irrigation District power station were in danger, firefighters in Winterhaven asked for a second alarm, Hettinger said.

The second alarm called in firefighters from the Holtville, Yuma, El Centro, Calexico, Brawley, Algodones and Imperial County fire departments.

The fire was "pretty much out" by the time Imperial Valley crews arrived, Hettinger said.

No structures were burned and no injuries were reported in the 15- to 20-acre fire.

The last crews left the scene after extinguishing hot spots between 8:30-9:30 p.m.

The cause of the fire is not known, Hettinger said.
